During Hull's teenage years in the Upper Cumberland hills, he often "ran the river" with Allen Gore, floating logs down the Caney Fork and Cumberland toward Nashville and taking a steamboat back.
They were nevertheless defeated at El Caney and the San Juan Heights, in engagements in which decisive parts were played by artillery, the Gatling gun (an early machinegun) and three regiments of black Americans.
