Alternatively he could impose martial law, cancel elections, shut down the Supreme Court and hope to weather the storm of protest at home and abroad. Or he could reach out to the one popular politician willing to bail him out if he is ready to share power: Benazir Bhutto. Ms Bhutto, twice elected as prime minister and twice deposed, faces corruption charges and is in exile. But she has said she would be willing to support General Musharraf as president for the next five years if he lets her stand at the next election, which she expects to win.
