Then finally there are the drugs. Not the hard stuff like steroids, but stranger stuff. There was a Yankees pitcher back in the ’50s or ’60s, I guess it was, who used to try to intimidate hitters by playing drunk. The all-time champ here though, Dock Ellis, who threw a no-hitter back in 1970 on LSD. He says the scariest moment in his career was the one time he tried to pitch sober. Serious stuff, but you know, it really is just a game.
