abstract:Becontree is a large housing estate of approximately in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in East London, England. It is located east-northeast of Charing Cross and was constructed in the interwar period as the largest public housing estate in the world of 100,000 people in 27,000 homes.
Many families took advantage of the right to buy their council house at 30% of its market value - at least two-thirds of the Becontree estate was sold to the private sector.
