Last week,U.N.Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon removed Kai Eide's deputy, U.S.diplomat Peter Galbraith, from his post after Galbraith accused his boss of failing to provide Afghan and international officials with evidence of fraud, primarily by Mr.Karzai's supporters.

In Afghanistan, Mr.Ban's special representative, Kai Eide,told reporters that his approach to the elections has always been one of respect for the Afghan constitution and the other institutions that were put in place to move the election process forward.

The new Special Representative of the Secretary-General succeeds Kai Eide of Norway, who will complete his assignment on 28 February, and to whom Mr. Ban is grateful for his intrepid spirit, strong determination and excellent leadership of UNAMA over the past two years, a critical period for Afghanistan with difficult elections and a very challenging security situation.
