In this paper, the effect of waves on nonlinear rolling damping is researched experimentally through attenuation test of a model ship rolling in irregular waves in a wave tank.

The results show that, due to the effect of viscoelastic damping, the attenuation coefficient increases with the increasing of modal order, while the vibrational frequencies decrease with it;
