Abdel Rahman has been a totemic figure to Islamists since 1981, when his pronouncements gave a group of Egyptian army officers the spiritual justification for assassinating President Anwar Sadat.
As for the army, incriminating documents that were seized during an investigation show that a group was indeed hoping to topple Mr Erdogan by, among other things, assassinating Christians and placing the blame on AK. Why not send them to Afghanistan?
