When you start a run or race too fast, all of your physiological systems spike. Your heart rate, body temperature, and respiration rate all rise, and sweat production increases. It's the physiological equivalent of revving your engine. You can maintain these heightened physiological levels for a short time, but if you don't soon back off on the accelerator, fatigue will set in.
