"As alleged, Ahmed Abassi had an evil purpose for seeking to remain in the United States to commit acts of terror and develop a network of terrorists here and to use this country as a base to support the efforts of terrorists internationally, " U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a release issued afterthe federal indictment against Abassi was unsealed on Thursday.
Massey said the government would normally ask that a defendant be held without bail when he was arrested after arrival from another country but decided not to seek detention because Rajaratnam returned to the United States so soon after hearing of theindictment and knowing he would be arrested upon his arrival.
