To carry a secret is to play with fire.
Long long ago, a man got the secret news that there was a holy fire burning in a far-away place, so he set out to look for it, hoping that he could manage to fetch its light to his family.
But before he can actually be made present at the actual event of the Nativity, he has to endure something painful and obviously momentous: "from out his secret Altar toucht with hallow'd fire."
The desire to be first is really central to this poem and it continues in this stanza: Have thou the honor first thy Lord to greet And join thy voice unto the Angel Choir, From out his secret Altar toucht with hallow'd fire.
