俄罗斯境内历史上有名的河流。俄罗斯欧洲部分的第三大河（部分支流在乌克兰境内）。源起中俄罗斯丘陵（Среднерусская воээышенность）东麓，曲折东南流，后折向西南，经森林草原带和草原带，注入亚速海的塔甘罗格湾，长1870公里，流域面积42.2万平方公里，河口多年平均流量935立方米/秒，年均径流总量约295亿立方米（不计灌溉用水）。 顿河东有窝瓦河，西有第聂伯河。在中下游——自其与乔尔纳亚卡力特瓦(Chyornaya Kalitva)河合流处至顿河口——顿河向东鼓出直至与伊洛夫利亚(Ilovlya)河交接的大弧。靠近弧的上端是广阔的齐姆良斯克水库(Tsimlyansk Reservoir)的上段。窝瓦-顿运河自水库上段伸展至窝瓦河，距离仅80公里。
