学名潜鸟，腿部较为粗壮，向前三趾间有蹼，体形似鸭，善于潜水，不善飞行和步行。 潜鸟常栖息于海滨及附近的湖泊中。主要以鱼类、甲壳动物和软体动物等为食物。分布较广泛，主要在高纬度地区。有迁徙习性。 潜鸟多见于中国福建、宁波等沿海地区活动。每次潮落，海边总会滞留有很多的小鱼、小虾、小蟹、小螺等海洋生物，这些都是海鸭营养丰富的天然饵料。 体长约60厘米，冬夏羽色有差异。头顶羽灰色，冬羽贯以黑褐纵纹，后颈乌褐色；上体其余部分、两翼、尾均为黑褐色，下体部分及头颈肚为纯白。常栖息海滨，主食鱼类。
