手工业是指使用简单工具，依靠手工劳动，从事小规模生产的工业。它最初与农业融为一体，属于农民副业性质的家庭手工业。农民把自己生产的农副产品作为原料进行加工，或者制造某些劳动工具和日用器皿。其产品除满足自己的需要外，多余的予以出卖。随着第二次社会大分工，手工业从农业中分离出来，形成了独立的个体手工业。个体手工业的特点是以一家一户为单位，使用私有的生产资料分散经营，一般不雇用工人或只雇用做辅助性工作的助手和学徒，并以本人的手工劳动为生活的主要来源。
