出纳是按照有关规定和制度，办理本单位的现金收付、银行结算及有关账务，保管库存现金、有价证券、财务印章及有关票据等工作的总称。 在中国古代出纳也指家庭等方面的收支管理情况，例如清田兰芳《明河南参政袁公（袁可立子袁枢）墓志铭》：“十七来归，即传家政。按亲族，御臧获，美肴酒，综出纳，无事不井井。” 从广义上讲，只要是票据、货币资金和有价证券的收付、保管、核算，就都属于出纳。它既包括各单位会计部门专设出纳机构的各项票据、货币资金、有价证券收付业务处理，票据、货币资金、有价证券的整理和保管，货币资金和有价证券的核算等各项工作，也包括各单位业务部门的货币资金收付、保管等方面的工作。狭义的出纳则仅指各单位会计部门专设出纳岗位或人员的各项工作。
