阉人，在中国古代别称为寺人、奄人、阉官、宦者、中官、内官、内臣、内侍、内监。古代的一些奴隶主和君王、贵族，为了使自己的妻妾们对他保持贞节，不准她们和一般男子接触，但后宫又需要男子服役，所以就大量地使用阉人，即中国所俗称的太监。
