铀核是指铀的原子核，铀元素有三种同位素（所谓同位素是指它们的原子核内含的质子数目相同，但含的中子数目不相同的元素，它们在元素周期上放在同一个位置上），即铀－234、铀－235和铀－238。其中的铀－234和铀－238不会发生核裂变，只有铀－235这种同位素原子能够发生核裂变，或者说，做核燃料的实际上是铀－235。但是，从矿山里开采出来的铀里面，铀－235的含量却又是很低，仅占0.66%，绝大部分是铀－238，它占了99.2%。
