边际收入是销售量变动一个单位所导致的收入变动额。即多销售一个单位的产品而相应增加的收入，或少销售一个单位的产品而相应减少的收入。边际收入同销售量之间的关联情况是：在完全竞争的市场条件下，由于产品销售价格是由市场总供给和总需求决定的，个别企业所经营的某种产品的市场销售价格是一特定常数，因而该产品多销售一个单位而相应增加的收入——边际收入也就是它的销售价格，即边际收入等于销售价格。可见，在这种市场条件下，边际收入不会随着销售量的变动而变动。在非完全竞争的市场条件下，由于产品销售价格的上升或下降必将导致产品销售数量的相应减少或增加，因而多销售一个单位产品所增加的收入——边际收入并不同销售价格相等，而是小于销售价格。这就是说，在此种市场条件下，边际收入将随着销售量的变动而变动，当销售量不断增加时，边际收入却不断递减。按照利润最大化原则，只要某种产品的边际收入大于边际成本，企业就应增加该种产品的产销量，而一旦边际收入和边际成本处于均衡状态时，企业盈利将达到最高水平。为此，企业通常把边际收入等于边际成本的特殊关系作为决定有关产品产销规模的重要依据。
