道德自由是指人们独立自主地进行道德选择和决定的意志和能力。亦指道德修养所达到的一种高度完满的境界。道德选择和决定的向由或意志自由，是道德责任的前提。许多多唯心主义思想家把道德由看做不受客观必然性制约的绝对意志自由。康德认为作为人的实践理性表现的善良意志是必然性支配的超感性的道德律令。存在主义者萨特认为人的本质是自由的。人的选择就是“自己给自己规定动机'决定作恶的是我自己，想去行善的也是我自己。“这个选择永远是无条件的”。唯心主义者肯定道德选择的自由，肯定人的责任，有合理之处，但把道德自由看成脱离社会规律的随意选择，导致唯意志论和个人主义。
