所谓适应原，英文翻译为Adaptogen，就是能使机体处于“增强非特异性防御能力的状态”的药物。适应原这一术语发源于1947年，由一名原苏联科学家多罗戈夫提出。他定义一种“适应原”为一种可通过产生非特异性抵抗力，从而使有机体可中和不利的物理，化学或生物应激的药物。
根据西方及日本科学家鉴于西药对人体副作用甚大，经过研究，产生了新的医药观念-适应原（Adaptogen），所谓适应原所具的三大条件，与中国上药灵芝所具的三条件，完全一致。
