“Now the American Dream is broken,” Shen tells me one evening at the career center, his fingers drumming restlessly on the table; he speaks mostly in Mandarin, and Yu helps me translate.

"That sure was a strange dream," he thought, shaking his head.
他不禁想，Roland刚才会否也做着这样的梦呢？如果他也像这样从梦中惊醒的话，他会不会去看看在两边都垫上枕头的婴儿床里熟睡的Nyah。
He wondered, in those moments, whether Roland ever had the same dream, and if he did, whether he got up to check on Nyah, asleep in her crib, padded with pillows on either side.
