载波通信（Carrier communication）是基于频分复用技术的电话多路通信体制，属于经典模拟通信的制式。在工程上，一路电话的电信号频谱被限制在300 ～3400赫的范围；考虑到保护性的频率间隔，一路电话所占的频带宽度为4千赫。因此，根据实用信道的不同频带宽度，就可以在一个信道的频带宽度内复用不同路数的电话信号。例如，架空明线信道典型地可以复用12路电话信号，对称电缆信道典型地可以复用60路电话信号，中同轴电缆信道则可以复用数千路电话信号，等等。从总体上说，通信技术正在大踏步地走向数字化，数字光纤通信、数字卫星通信和数字微波通信系统占有越来越大的比重，模拟的载波通信系统日益收缩。但在一定时期内，载波通信在支线和农村地区仍然会继续发挥作用。
