躯体死亡(somatic death)也称为整体死亡或个体死亡(individual death)，。此期全脑机能和循环、呼吸机能已不可逆的中止，标志着死亡的开始。但有些器官、组织和细胞还能继续进行机能活动，或者说它们还活着。甚至在人工呼吸机等支持生命的器械和药物的维持下，心脏和肺仍具有机能活动。当然一旦撤除这些支持措施，心跳、呼吸即很快停止，但它们的部分功能如心肌的收缩性、兴奋性仍能维持一段不长的时间，
