货柜船是是指可用于装载国际标准集装箱的船舶;狭义是指全部舱室及甲板专用于装载集装箱的全集装箱船舶。其运货能力通常以装载20英尺换算标准箱的箱位表示。第1艘集装箱船是美国于1957年用一艘货船改装而成的。由于它装卸效率极高，停港时间大为缩短，并减少了运输装卸中的货损，因此而得到迅速发展。到20世纪70年代，集装箱船已经成熟定型。
