设备改造是指为了改善现有设备的性能和提高生产效率，对设备进行技术革新或结构改进。有两种基本形式： (1)设备的改装。通过改变或加大现有设备的容量、体积、形状或功率等，提高设备的生产能力，以满足生产之需。但是，单纯的设备改装，不能使设备在质的方面得到提高，不利于促进企业的技术进步。(2)设备的技术改造。用先进的科学技术成果对现有设备加以改进，以提高设备的现代化水平，改变其技术落后的状况。
