红细胞中最重要的成分是血红蛋白，血红蛋白是由珠蛋白和血红素结合而成的。珠蛋白的生物合成与一般蛋白质相同。血红素是铁卟啉化合物，是血红蛋白的辅基，也是肌红蛋白、细胞色素、过氧化物酶、过氧化氢酶等的辅基。参与血红蛋白合成的血红素主要在骨髓的幼期红细胞和网织红细胞中合成。
