环节动物游走多毛类颚部的齿状物──齿片所形成的化石，又名虫颚。由于虫牙微小，常与虫体分开保存，故列为微体化石。虫牙的颜色黑而有光泽，其成分为几丁质、钙质，矿物成分主要为氟磷灰石。齿片常有一定的形态及组合方式，是研究虫牙的重要内容。
任一种主要生活在温暖沙带的活跃且色彩鲜艳的食虫虎甲科甲虫，有大的颚，其幼虫行动迟缓并生活在垂直的地洞里。
