居住在云南省边陲的哀牢山、无量山一带海拔1800米的山区，人口约4万。1956年夏天，中国人民解放军工作队在中越边界的金平苗族瑶族傣族自治县的原始森林里发现了苦聪人的踪迹。从60年代开始，在政府的帮助下，苦聪人逐渐走出山林，实行定居定耕。1985年，“苦聪人”被划归为拉祜族。
