胡饼就是馕，与胡饼类似的传统饼类食品有“烧饼”、 “炉饼”，“麻饼”等。汉代控制西域后，引进芝麻，胡桃，为饼类制作增添了新辅料，这时便出现了以胡桃仁为馅的圆形饼也被称为“胡饼”。
太宗李世民大喜，接过装璜华丽的饼盒，取出彩色圆饼，指着悬挂天空的明月说道：“应将胡饼邀蟾蜍（即月亮）。”
