职业高原是由于组织或个人的原因，在职业阶梯上向上移动发展的可能性变得很小的情况。巴德维克1986年提出职业高原一般包括三种类型：（1)结构型，由外部原因造成,如组织因素；（2)内容型，由个人原因造成，如技能或素质缺乏；（3)生活型，由个人原因造成，如个人压力过大导致焦崩状态。在组织“扁平化”趋势越来越普遍的情况下，职业高原现象变得越来越多，会挫伤员工的工作热情和士气，对组织的人力资源管理产生了挑战。
