缩微技术是一种涉及多学科、多部门、综合性强且技术成熟的现代化信息处理技术。起源于1838年英国摄影师丹赛用摄影的方法通过显微镜第一次把一张20英寸的文件拍成1/8寸的缩微影像，至今已发展了上百年。它采用专门的设备、材料和工艺，把原始信息原封不动地以缩小影像的形式摄影记录在感光材料（通常是胶片）上，经加工制作成缩微品保存、传播和使用。
