终止妊娠，指母体承受胎儿在其体内发育成长的过程的终止。胎儿及其附属物即胎盘﹑胎膜自母体内排出是妊娠的终止。 终止妊娠就是结束怀孕的意思。一般是由于意外怀孕，胎儿有严重生理缺陷，孕妇患有妊娠期疾病（妊娠期高血压），或因各种原因引起的发育异常（羊水量异常）而采取的医学方法。
