在一般培养条件下，群体中的细胞处于不同的细胞周期时相之中。为了研究某一时相细胞的代谢、增殖、基因表达或凋亡，常需采取一些方法使细胞处于细胞周期的同一时相，这就是细胞同步化技术。选用DNA合成抑制剂可逆地抑制S期细胞DNA合成而不影响其他细胞周期运转，最终可将细胞群体阻断在G1/S期交界处；一些抑制微管聚合的药物，因抑制有丝分裂装置的形成和功能行使，可将细胞阻断在有丝分裂中期，即使细胞同步于M期。
