红橡木源于美国红橡树，属壳斗科栎属(Quercusrubra)落叶乔木，高可达35米，胸径可达1.0米。广泛分布于美国东部地区，木质坚硬沉重，机加工性能良好，干燥缓慢。红橡木可天然更新，天然更新林分的蓄积量达280m3/hm2，育林成本低，木材产量高。该树种还耐火烧，即便其地上部分已死，地下部分仍然能萌芽。
