站长泛指拥有个人网站的群体，因此成为一名站长必须满足一个前提，那就是拥有一个或一个以上独立域名网站。拥有个人主页、博客、空间都不能算真正意义上的站长。 站长是一种特殊的群体，而不是一种职业。很多站都有正式的职业，可能是学生、教师、科学家、公务员等，还有一些站长甚至有自己的企业，因此大多数站长以网名示人，而真正的名字并不为大家熟知。
我本人也是经常这样想的，如果一个博客站长经常写的都是一些意义不大的文章，那么也不要期望哪天奇迹出现，他会突然写出一篇高质量的文章。
