空气循环机安装于飞机左、右发动机短舱后段，是由压气机、涡轮和风扇组成的三轮机械轴承高速转子部件。工作原理为：来自发动机的高温、高压引气经过双级热交换器的初级热交换器初步冷却后进入到空气循环机压气机内使气流增压升温，然后再经双级热交换器的次级热交换器冷却，进入涡轮膨胀使压力温度降低以满足飞机空调的要求，同时带动压缩机和风扇工作，是空调系统的核心部件。
车辆的冷气系统多使用冷媒, 但飞机的空调系统不使用冷媒, 而是利用热交换器和空气循环机(air cycle machine)来产生温度调节所需的冷空气.
