幼虫蛀食萌动的种子或幼苗的地下组织，引致腐烂死亡。种蝇又名灰地种蝇、菜蛆、根蛆、地蛆，以幼虫在土中为害播下的蔬菜（瓜类、豆类、十字花科蔬菜、菠菜、葱蒜等）种子，取食胚乳或子叶，引起种芽畸形、腐烂而不能出苗；钻食蔬菜根部，引起根茎腐烂或全株枯死。种蝇为世界性害虫，在我国以粤北发生较多。
