直接顶是指直接位于矿层之上，且在放顶时能及时冒落下来的岩层。一般由一层和几层不稳定岩石组成。直接顶的厚度为放顶后能在采空区自行垮落的岩层厚度。位于煤层或伪顶之上具有一定的稳定性，移架或回柱后能自行垮落的岩层，且此岩层不存在力的传递。
