新的矫治器源于方丝弓矫治器，但却消除了在弓丝上弯制第一、二、三序列弯曲的必要，一根有基本弓形的平直弓丝插入托槽，就可以完成牙齿三方位的移动；治疗结束时，完成弓丝也完全平直，所以称为直丝弓矫治器 (Straight Wire Appliance 简称SWA)。
