画僧，顾名思义即僧人画家，兼有画家和僧人双重身份。佛画，指以佛教内容为题材的绘画。这两者既涉及佛教，又涉及绘画，所以也属于“佛教与绘画”的论述范围。画僧最早出现于隋唐时代。最早将佛教艺术传入中国的，主要来自西域，包括中亚和印度的僧侣，中国早期石窟造建从发源到设计施工当然与他们有关，那种明显地来自印度北部的犍陀罗风格的影响即此段历史的明证。
因有以禅入诗、入画的传统，中国历史上出现了为数众多的诗僧、画僧、诗画僧。
