生长延缓剂（growth retardator） 指那些对植物茎端亚顶端分生细胞或初生分生细胞的细胞分裂有抑制作用的人工合成的有机物。它对叶、花和果实的形成没有影响。如 矮壮素，AMO-1618（[2-异丙基-4（三甲基氯化铵）-5-甲基]苯基呱啶羧酸酯），多效唑（2RS，3RS）-1-对氯苯基-2-（1，2，4-三唑-1基）-4，4-二甲基戊醇-3，英文通用名为paclobutrazol，代号PP333）。除B9外，其他均能阻碍赤霉素的生物合成。如施以赤霉素，可以不同程度地解除延缓剂的作用。
