指生物形成自己的体躯或者遗留给子孙的过程。这是从生态学的角度来理解时所使用的术语。是A.Thienemann（1931）最先把这个词引进到生物学中的。在当时就有二重意义，所以直到现在在概念上或用法上仍很混乱。除上述一般用法外，还有的定义为在一定的时间内形成的生物体及其排出物的总量。可是现在已把后者定名为生产速度。
