生活在同一生境中的生物之间相互施加影响的现象。包括同种个体间的种交互作用：一方面，异性个体可以结成配偶，共同哺育子代，多个家族还可结成更大的社群，共同取食、御敌；另一方面，同种个体也可为获取同一资源而互相竞争，甚至残杀。这两类表面看来相互矛盾的现象，如果由整个物种的角度来看，是可以统一起来的。因为竞争可以淘汰不适者，使种群保持在与环境相适应的规模内，也可避免资源枯竭而招致更大的灾难。
