火漆由法国人鲁索在1626年左右发明。他通过试验，把不同比率的焦油、辰砂和虫漆（印度的天然漆）混合加热成火漆，颜色呈红色或棕红色，再选用合适图案的金属模子，打印在尚未凝固的火漆上，冷却后即可留下清晰图案。
