淬火时效指的是合金经高温固溶处理获得过饱和固溶体后,在室温和较高温度下等温一定时间,将从过饱和固溶体中析出弥散的新相,如钢中的碳或氮化物,使合金的强度和硬度升高,而塑性降低。淬火时效是沉淀硬化不锈钢、马氏体时效钢及许多有色合金强化的主要手段。
