日本民间曲艺的一种，室町幕府初期，有人说唱源氏公子和净琉璃小姐的爱情故事，因而得名。文禄-庆长年间（1592-1614），盲人说唱家泽住检校采用三弦伴奏，代替琵琶，并和演木偶戏的人合作，创造了木偶净琉璃。其唱腔为歌舞伎所吸取。
佛教传到中国后，奉琉璃至宝，“药师琉璃光如来”所居的“东方净土”，即以净琉璃为地，光照“天地人”三界之暗。
