将固体颗粒均匀地堆在有开孔底的容器内，形成一床层，若流体自上而下通过，颗粒并不运动，此种床层成为固体床；若流体自上而下通过床层，低流速时，情况与固体床无异，流速加大则颗粒便活动使床层膨胀，流速进一步加大时，颗粒会彼此离开而在流体中活动，流速愈大，则活动愈剧烈，并在床层内各处各方向运动。最后一种情况称为固体流化态，流化态后颗粒床层称为流化床。将其运用到实际生产生活中的技术就是流化床技术。
