沉木”又叫“流木”；“流木”是国外的叫法，“沉木”是中国的叫法。在水草造景的材料中，除了石材、沉木材，尚有人造装饰品、仿真水草、背景板等，凡是可放进水中不致浮起，不影响水质，都可以成为造景的材料，但是其中最能营造出自然效果，又可和水草无暇的融合，就数沉木和石材了。
软木树皮和沉木是很好的装饰材料。
