比目鱼肌由其形状而得名，它在腓骨、胫骨后，横插在腓肠肌之下，一直插到小腿内侧，因此从正面看，小腿内外侧腓肠肌的下边都可以看到它，而且此时对内侧起的形体作用更大。 比目鱼肌是腿部重要结构之一。腓肠肌下面的扁平的小腿的肌肉，起自胫、腓骨上端的后面，因形似比目鱼，故名比目鱼肌。它与腓肠肌合称小腿三头肌。
