模型池塘是具有池塘基本特征的一种实验装置。有两种基本类型：一种是直接移植某个池塘的部分生物群落及环境介质水河底泥等到模型池塘中进行培养，形成池塘微生态系统；另一种是放进几种已知的人工培养的生物群落、滤过的清洁水和加工过的底质进行培养，构成人工模拟池塘生态系统。模拟池塘用来研究化学物质在池塘生态系统中的迁移、转化与归宿规律及对池塘生物群落结构和功能的影响。
