榕小蜂分类有广义和狭义之分。广义上讲，凡是在榕果子房中生长发育的寄生性膜翅目小蜂总科昆虫统称为榕小蜂，其中大多数种类属于小蜂总科，也有少数姬蜂总科的茧蜂科的种类在榕果内发育。 榕小蜂科(Agaonidae)昆虫也就是狭义的榕小蜂范畴。科研上，一般学者所指的榕小蜂就是狭义上的榕小蜂。除了传粉榕小蜂之外，榕果内还存在着大量的非传粉榕小蜂。
